Over dimensional transportation with Gelle Transport
Over-dimensional (OD) freight is any load that exceeds the standard legal limits for highway transport. On most US interstate routes those limits are about 8 feet 6 inches wide, 13 feet 6 inches to 14 feet high (varying by state) and 80,000 lb gross vehicle weight, with trailer-length limits set by each state. Exceed any of them and the move needs permits and careful planning.
Permits and regulations
Each state issues its own oversize and overweight permits, with its own rules on dimensions, travel times, escorts and routes. A move crossing several states needs a permit from each one. We handle the permit process and plan the route to meet every state’s conditions.

Trailer selection
The right trailer keeps the load as low and legal as possible: step decks and RGN (removable gooseneck) lowboys reduce overall height, stretch trailers handle long loads, and multi-axle trailers spread heavy weight to meet axle limits.
Escorts, signage and timing
Depending on dimensions, states may require “Oversize Load” banners, flags, lights, pilot/escort vehicles and sometimes police escorts. Many states restrict oversize travel to daylight hours and limit weekend and holiday movement.

Over-Dimensional Transportation FAQs
What makes a load over-dimensional?
Exceeding legal width (about 8.5 ft), height (about 13.5–14 ft), length or weight (80,000 lb gross) limits for the route.
Who issues oversize permits?
Each state’s department of transportation issues permits for travel within that state.
How much notice do OD moves need?
Permits and planning take time; give as much notice as possible, especially for multi-state or very large loads.
